Event nectanet
On the road to zero emissions
A beacon among logistics companies
Information event organised by ‘nectanet Zero Emission’ attracted many visitors to the best practice example of Klumpp + Müller
Anyone who is energy self-sufficient in a veritable energy crisis is on the winning side. This is exactly what Ortenau is striving for. The Ortenau business development organisation nectanet, the network of industry and politics in the economic region, is pooling forces towards energy self-sufficiency with regular events under the title ‘nectanet Zero Emission’. Four committed partners are driving the energy self-sufficiency alliance forward: Ortenau District Office, Ortenau Energy Agency, KEFF (Regional Efficiency Centre for Resource Efficiency) and nectanet itself.
Networks need opportunities to work on the network. And alliances need lighthouses to guide them. This is one of the reasons why Klumpp + Müller, a company based in Kehl, Germany, which is currently pursuing a consistent focus on sustainability, hosted the latest event in the ‘nectanet Zero Emission’ series. The Mayor of Kehl, Wolfram Britz, addressed a large crowd of guests from the worlds of politics, administration and business: ‘We need courage for the future in order to realise the issues that concern us all. The port of Kehl is one of the >best places< for this in Ortenau’.
CEO Alexander Münscher explained that this ‘best place’ fulfils its attribute when a logistics company like Klumpp + Müller makes the most of the location in pursuit of the ‘zero emissions’ goal:
‘Two years ago, we could already see where logistics was heading. We now have four electric vehicles in use – the perfect complement to our trimodal logistics. We started years ago with what is now politically prescribed. Because there is simply no excuse not to do it.

Klumpp + Müller and Climate Partner Upper Rhine: working together for ‘green logistics’ and resource efficiency
Spedition Klumpp + Müller now not only uses the low-emission logistics of inland waterway vessels and the possibilities of its own thousand-metre-long track system, but also the electric drives of its own lorries – and these are charged in a resource-saving manner thanks to its own photovoltaic system. A second container terminal in Kehl harbour and a bulk goods facility currently under construction round off the family company’s ‘green logistics’ concept.
Dr Fabian Burggraf, Managing Director of Klimapartner Oberrhein, demonstrated that industry does not have to go it alone on its journey towards ‘zero emissions’: ‘We see ourselves as a partner to industry in the transformation and provide traditional networking and real support, as we, as the Southern Upper Rhine Resource Efficiency Competence Centre (KEFF+), are working on a decisive factor for a competitive, sustainable and future-oriented economy in the Southern Upper Rhine region and in Europe as a business location’.

‘Zero emission, the building block of the future’
Klumpp + Müller has already achieved a great deal:
Environmental protection
Environmental protection as a way to
savings in business practice
Volker Pohle, Managing Director of Promotec Mischler Torsysteme in Willstätt, reported on what KEFF and KEFF+ mean in practice: ‘After the generously subsidised KEFF and KEFF+ checks, we decided in favour of a self-financed energy audit. The effort was low for us in relation to the result, and the outside view of the processes in our company was absolutely helpful. In the end, we learnt that environmental protection leads to savings. So: just do it,’ appealed Volker Pohle.
nectanet Managing Director Dominik Fehringer also expressed his thanks for this ‘authentic experience report’:
‘The low-threshold nature of this programme, which aims to save raw materials, materials and energy, cannot be overestimated.’

Heat transition
badenova Netze GmbH is shaping the energy and heating transition with a focus on green hydrogen
Jonas Schmidinger, Head of Asset Management Gas Grid at badenova Netze GmbH, reported on the future of energy supply with regard to pipeline networks:
‘Our goal is to become climate-neutral by 2035, which is why we see ourselves as shapers of the energy and heating transition for 160 municipalities. Hydrogen production in the European Union plays an important role in this, which is why we are working today on an efficient distribution network to guarantee the transport of green hydrogen tomorrow’.
Sustainable logistics
Klumpp + Müller as a pioneer in sustainable logistics
Falk Schrader, Key Account Manager at Klumpp + Müller, once again made it clear why the 70-year-old logistics company can indeed be seen as an example of best practice: ‘We have already set up our fleet in such a way that almost ten per cent of it is powered by renewable energy – and the trend is rising. There aren’t many logistics companies that have already gone this far. With our two terminals in Kehl harbour, we are perfectly connected to the seaports via inland waterway vessels. When companies look at their supply chains from the perspective of their own sustainability, they very quickly realise how much leverage there is in logistics – and then Klumpp + Müller has the right solutions to offer,’ said Falk Schrader with conviction. Alexander Münscher then explained once again how important it is for regional companies to accept green and, above all, trimodal logistics like Klumpp + Müller:

Toll increase of up to 83%!
We have the solution.
From 1 December 2023, the federal government will introduce CO2 emission classes for the toll based on the Toll Amendment Act. Lorries will pay a CO2 surcharge, which will increase toll rates by 70-83% in emission class 1. In response, Klumpp + Müller offers environmentally friendly logistics solutions: By utilising their Trimodal Terminal and modern e-trucks, companies can reduce CO2 emissions and associated costs.
